Are All the Giants Dead?
This brilliant story is a fairy tale for modern children. Mildred, a society reporter who mingles with the well-born in her workaday life, is equally at home with fairy-tale princes and takes young James on a moonlight visit to their aging but still fanciful world. Here James meets some of the traditional characters, all a little older: for instance, a middle-aged couple known as Boofy and Beau to their friends who were famous in their youth as Beauty and the Beast. James becomes involved in the fortunes of their young daughter, Dulcibel, helping to free her from an evil spell. With her and the two old heroes, Jack-of-the-Beanstalk and Jack-the-Giant-Killer, he seeks the last giant who has the talisman that will save her.
Brian Froud's illustrations match perfectly the enchantment of this latest story by the author of The Borrowers.
