Over the Mountain
A spirited memoir of an Irish misspent youth. 'Maryanne Kerr has zest and wit, plus a deep truthfulness which forces one to take what she has to say seriously.'
- RONALD BLYTH, AUTHOR OF ARKENFIELD
As the only daughter among four brothers, Maryanne Kerr's childhood in the countryside of County Derry was solitary. However, at the age of twelve, she won a scholarship to a convent boarding-school, where she at last found friends. Her great love was singing but, this not being considered a suitable career in the Ireland of the 1940s, she found herself first an unwilling pharmacist, then a happier teacher. She eventually made it to the Big Band scene of the 50s, though her rackety life-style in Dublin led to the improvident birth of a son.
