Singular Stories (Pre-loved)
The short stories included in this volume were written during the 1980s, and represent the flowering of short fiction in Singapore. When the decade began, the Singaporean public was largely fed a literary diet of traditional English and American authors, with a few Singaporean writers; by 1990, books by Singaporeans were rapidly supplementing imports in the bookstores, and on many occasions replacing them in the bestseller lists and review columns.
Singular Stories presents the first of these efforts, aiming to demonstrate the diversity of themes and styles being employed by Singaporean writers. Volume One looks at the conflicts between traditional and modern societies, the role of women, the Japanese Occupation, and the lighter side of the Singaporean character; styles range from straight narrative to surreal to experimental.
The editor, Robert Yeo, is Senior Lecturer at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He has published three books of poetry and a novel; has edited numerous anthologies of short stories and plays; and has seen four of his own plays produced. In 1993, he was awarded a Fulbright grant to study the teaching of playwriting at Boston University, where 1992 Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott was among his professors.
