The Soft Whisper of the Dead
In less than eight years of full-time writing, Charles L. Grant has garnered an even dozen World Fantasy and five Nebula Award nominations. Half of these honors have been for stories or novels dealing with Oxrun Station, a distressing little Connecticut town found n the same maps as Lovecraft's Arkham and King's Castle Rock.
The Soft Whisper of the Dead is the first of the Oxrun tales to be placed in other than a contemporary setting. The first in a trilogy of historical horror novels, it is the account of Count Braslov's attempt to subjugate the Oxrun populace to vampiric will.
The Soft Whisper of the Dead is a vampire novel in the classic manner. It is frought with gas-light atmosphere, beautiful and plucky women, knowing servants, and a befuddled but resourceful constabulary.
The two-color illustrations and color dust wrapper are the work of Massachusetts artist R.J. Krupowicz.
